Decorate your Wooden Spoons

It is pouring rain here and what better weather for a craft night? You're warm and cozy inside. No better way to spend an evening. I have seen adorable burned wooden spoons all over Pinterest and Etsy and knew I had to try them out for myself. I had the materials saved up for a rainy day anyway so figured I'd try it out tonight. I had purchased the wooden spoons at Wal-Mart for $.88 (what a bargain when you are trying out a new craft) and pulled out a soldering iron I had previously bought. These irons are around $10 at most major retailers or hardware stores.

When you use the soldering iron please read all warning and operating instructions. These things look small and innocent but they get hot. VERY hot. They are a little tricky to use because the handle is up high. Once you practice it starts to get easier. Just have a sturdy table and a quiet work area so you can concentrate (on not burning yourself). Don't let this warning scare you though, they are a fun and inexpensive crafting tool.

I tried to keep my iron straight up and down but you can play with the angles to make different shapes and textures. The longer you keep the iron on the wood the darker the dot will show up.

Keep working all around the spoon. I made my dots spontaneous but you could follow a pattern. I left the middle part of the spoon blank but you could fill it in

Here I used the edges of the iron to make a heart shape at the bottom of the spoon.

As you can see my dots aren't making any type of picture. I tried to cluster them more around the actual spoon and space them out even more as I worked down the handle. Here are some after pictures of the spoon taken with some tea towels and twine.

I think this would make a charming house warming gift or a new neighbor gift. You could even pair it with a nice pitcher too. When first starting out I suggest beginning with the dots, they really are so easy. When you get more comfortable with the iron you could really make any design. It does take some getting use to and since you hold it higher up at a unique angle, your hand can get a little tired/cramped. Just take a break and start again. If you make a mistake the spoons were very inexpensive. Next time I would even try maybe tracing an outline of what I wanted on the spoon with a pencil so I had something to follow. Here are a couple more I tried out. I tried to keep it simple. You can see I got a little shaky on the line of the arrow but it kind of adds character. :)

I can't wait to practice a little more and try some other designs, I'll share when I do. Thank you for visiting,
