DIY Natural Fly Repellent

It is finally starting to feel like spring around here. My husband and I spent this past week cleaning up our flower beds, trimming our landscape and picking up the patio. We love this weather and are looking forward to grilling and entertaining again. I’ve noticed just a couple of flies out and about now that the weather is warming up and which prompted me to prep my DIY natural fly repellent to be proactive.

I used this simple and effective trick last summer. The flies were SO bad. They’d hover around us at our patio table and follow us inside where they would drive us insane. I couldn’t stand it any longer. It wasn’t much help that we lived more in the country as well. I researched homemade fly repellents and came upon this gem of an idea. All you need is water, pennies and a clear container. I used leftover mason jars and plastic baggies.

When I first tested this idea out last summer I noticed a change immediately. Now, let me be honest… this does not kill any flies, and it won’t work on every single fly in the area but it will deter them and you will notice the amount of flies change. This is not by any means a miracle worker, it will just keep flies away from around your penny container, which makes the table a perfect place for it.

I put the jars on my back patio table and I hung up a plastic baggie of pennies above the door leading inside from the garage and another leading inside from the back patio. This helped keep some flies from coming inside. Especially in the summer when they are most pesky. I’ve had friends try this and they noticed it helped as well.  Again, this does not work on every single fly and there still might be some that get through … but I like this idea better than those sticky long fly traps, long dangly tape or the jugs of goop hanging around.

If anything you could try this out for yourself using materials you already have. I was reading that this worked because the color and image of the pennies (the cleaner the better) in the water is amplified and effects the flies eyesight, making them not want to go around that area. Some articles said it resembles the look of a hornets nest which is why they will stay away.

There have been times when friends would come over and make comments how we didn’t seem to have flies like they did. That was the best! Do you have any homemade tricks you’ve tried for flies around the home?
