Cat Scratching Post

Earlier this week I mentioned how my husband and I started picking up the backyard. The weather has been so nice and we've been motivated to make things look good again. We've had an eyesore right at our patio for the past couple of months. My cat was using our house post as a scratching post... it was wearing down and discoloring and just looking awful. That's when I had the idea to cover it with jute... I figured as Sophie, our cat, used it we could easily replace it when it needed an update again. Let's face it... a cat's gonna do what a cat wants to do.

When I say eyesore, I mean it... look at these before pictures... just looks terrible. UGH!

Supplies:

So I picked up some thick 3/8 inch jute at Home Depot for around $8.00 and our handy staple gun and went to work.

I only stapled the beginning piece and the ending piece. My husband helped me hold it in place to make it a little safer during the process and we started wrapping the jute in a circle. Just make sure the jute is nice and snug.

Then keep wrapping until you're finish and staple the end to the post.

Here is how it looks now that it's wrapped...

I love our darling little Sophie but somehow she always gets her way. I figured we could try and keep her off of the post but she is an inside and outside cat and we won't always be able to catch her or stop her in the act. In my head, this was the best solution. Here she is watching intently while I work.

This was a lot easier than painting the post or doing any drastic changes. As I mentioned earlier now we can just change out the jute if it starts to look worn and used. I doubt that will be for a while, it's pretty thick stuff.
