I love the beach! So I decorated one of my spare bedrooms in a beach theme and I had the hardest time finding the right light for the bedside. Granted today the beach theme is very popular and there are very cute light options out there now that I would have purchased had the options been available. Since things weren’t available, I decided that I wanted to make my own light after finding the Morkt Lantern at IKEA that perfectly matched the color scheme in the room.
Supplies
- Lantern
- Light Kit
- Frosted Spray Paint
- Drill
I bought two light kits from Home Depot not knowing which would be the right fit. I ended up using the one on the left hand side. I had hubby use a drill press and put a hole the size of the threaded tube, that came with the light kit, directly in the middle of the bottom of the lantern and also on the side so that the lantern would sit flat on the night stand. After the holes are drilled take the white electric cord and feed it through the side hole and then the hole directly in the middle. Next follow the directions on the packaging to attach the rest of the light kit to the electric cord.
I was excited that everything fit and the light turned on and off with no problem, but didn’t like seeing the lightbulb so I found frosted glass spray paint to frost the glass.
I only needed two coats before I was happy with the results.
I definitely love how this turned out! I bought a switch for the light plug that plugs directly into the wall so guests My mom also has a beach themed room at her house and asked me to make her the same lamp!

It looks great, but I’d be worried about using something as an electric lamp that isn’t meant for it. An LED bulb would ease my mind personally, because I’d be concerned about the heat of incandescent. Then again, it appears that the Morkt *is* meant for candles. I am just scared of fires.
Those plug-in wall switches are wonderful, aren’t they?

I couldn’t tell you what type of bulb I used! To be honest I didn’t even think of the electrical concerns and definitely should have…haha! Everything has been fine though and the glass and metal don’t get extremely hot.
