Wood Block Conversation Hearts Tutorial

I was wanting to find some fun home decor crafts in honor of Valentine's Day. When I started searching through Pinterest I couldn't find anything that I really liked. Everything seemed to look like child crafts or even a bit cheese-y. There were many wreath choices but I was wanting something for home decor. After some thinking I had the idea to paint wood blocks to resemble conversation hearts. The result turned out great!

Supplies:

Last year my Aunt gave me a box of these fun little wooden blocks. I probably have a couple hundred of them. I've been stumped about what to use them for so I was excited for this Valentine's craft.

I picked out 6 different pastel, light colored acrylic craft paints. I googled conversation hearts and tried to match the paint with the hearts as best I could.

I used a sponge brush to paint and I did this process slowly. Start with 3 sides and paint a thin layer. After it dries in a couple of minutes add another thin layer. This takes a little bit more time but it will help you avoid getting globs of paint along the edges. Then repeat on the other 3 sides of the block.

On my Silhouette I created a file by making squares the same size as the blocks then added text in the middle that were also on candy conversation hearts.

I love my Cameo.

Carefully weed the vinyl and place each square vinyl on one face of the blocks.

This next part is a new trick I learned. Instead of painting over the vinyl stencil right away take an extra step and paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the stencil first. This seals the stencil so the paint won't seep through the vinyl and smear under the edges.

Let the Mod Podge dry for a few minutes then take a flat sponge brush and dab the paint over the top. Just like the first step, just do one thin coat at a time.

Let it dry a little bit then peel off the vinyl. It came out PERFECT!

Here are more of the blocks after taking off the vinyl. With a steady hand I had to weed out the middle of some of the letters with one of my vinyl tools but this wasn't too hard. I had a little system going, while one Mod Podge was drying I painted another bock with paint and was peeling the vinyl off of another.

They are so adorable. I love how the paint isn't perfectly even since most of the words on the actual candy hearts aren't either.

I am shocked I haven't seen these anywhere else but I think they would add a nice touch to any home decor in honor of Valentine's Day.

These make me smile! They were fun and the Silhouette made it so easy. I loved learning the new Mod Podge trick and will use that for any stenciling projects from now on. How do you decorate for Valentine's Day?
